PReFuCell – Advancing Pressurized Reversible Solid Oxide Cells

With the joint project PReFuCell – Advancing the Potential for Pressurized Reversible Fuel Cells, Reverion and its project partners are pursuing the ambitious goal of improving the efficiency and reducing the costs of reversible ceramic solid oxide cells (rSOCs) through pressurized operation.

The project is designed to strengthen technological leadership and value creation in reversible fuel cell technology, reduce dependencies related to energy security, and accelerate the decarbonization of energy systems and the hydrogen economy.

Running from January 2026 through December 2028, the project is led by Reverion as overall project coordinator together with its partners TUM-LES, smk, and bifa Environmental Institute.

In addition to the technical development work, the project includes a life cycle assessment and a feasibility study on recycling rSOC systems. The goal is to enable a sustainable and economically viable use of raw materials beyond the system’s operational lifetime.

Through PReFuCell, Reverion is laying the foundation for the future megawatt-scale deployment of its technology.

PReFuCell makes an important contribution to the energy transition and will help advance Germany’s hydrogen economy.
