Reverion is nominated for the German Future Prize 2026
Reverion has been nominated for the German Future Prize 2026 (Deutscher Zukunftspreis), the Federal President’s Award for Technology and Innovation. Co-founders Dr.-Ing. Stephan Herrmann, Felix Fischer and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hartmut Spliethoff of the Chair of Energy Systems at the Technical University of Munich, where Reverion’s journey began, are therefore among the three teams competing for the award this year. As is tradition, it will be presented in Berlin on November 18, 2026.
The award recognizes the technology they developed: a reversible high-temperature fuel cell power plant that generates electricity from biogas, natural gas or hydrogen as required, or converts surplus renewable electricity into storable gas, and is even CO₂-negative when running on biogas. In real-world operation, a pre-series plant achieved an electrical efficiency of 74.2 percent, a new world record for thermal power plants.
"Our mission is to rethink efficiency, not merely as a technical or economic metric, but as a key element of the energy transition," says Stephan Herrmann, CEO of Reverion.
The idea emerged in 2015 during Herrmann’s doctoral research at TU Munich, together with his advisor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hartmut Spliethoff. In 2022, Reverion was founded as a spin-off from TUM; today the company employs around 220 people in Eresing. Seven plants are already operating in the field.
